Why Sarcoma?

Sarcoma is a rare and malignant cancer that arises from connective tissues. It accounts for less than 1% of all adult cancer diagnoses, only about 10,000 new cases a year. Compare that with almost 250,000 new cases of breast cancer each year or 180,000 new cases of prostate cancer. Because most physicians see only a handful of sarcomas during their entire careers, it is recommended that these patients seek care at centers that have sarcoma specialists. M.D. Anderson is one of these centers.

The M.D. Anderson Sarcoma Center in Houston, TX sees thousands of sarcoma patients every year. Most of these patients are financially burdened during their treatment journey, which often requires chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. The resources for financial assistance that currently exist for our patients are limited for this rare and aggressive cancer.  We created the SPA fund to spread awareness and alleviate financial hardship.
